 Production Information

The Canon S5 and SX10 digital cameras are good enough for serious fashion photography and can also make streaming videos with stereo sound for YouTube.com and other sites.  They have a 12x or 20x zoom lens and 8 or 10 megapixels.  Canon lenses are among the best!  Shop Amazon.com

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi ($640) is a good digital SLR camera for the money.

  Say it with television!

The Kodak Zi6 is a good pocket cam for $153 or less.  It can easily upload 720p HD footage to YouTube.com and also functions as a 3MP still camera with a macro mode.  It takes 2 AA rechargeable batteries.  Add a 16GB Class 6 SDHC card which costs between $30 and $40 and an inexpensive tripod.

The Canon FS100 ($250) is an inexpensive SD camcorder that would also be good for putting videos on the web.

A low budget broadcast quality camcorder system:

These items are often for sale on eBay.  The prices are approximate.  You can find most of them by searching for Sony EX1.  You can read  equipment reviews at BHPhotoVideo.com

Sony PMW EX1 camcorder ($5275 or less)
This camcorder has to be updated by Sony to firmware version 1.11 before it will accept the MxM (or MxR) to ExpressCard/34 card readers.  16GB Class 6 SDHC cards are much less expensive than the Sony SxS memory cards.

AS 222 stereo shotgun mic  $50

The video files can be copied to the hard drive on a dual core notebook computer with an ExpressCard/34 slot or an SD card slot.  Then the video would be editied with Sony Vegas 8.0b at the remote location..

The video could be transferred to a quad core video editing desktop computer at a central location by FTP over the Internet for further editing and making Blu-ray DVDs for distribution or broadcast.

Tripod with a Manfrotto 501 fluid head (under $350)

Shoulder mount for EX1 $300

Portabrace soft case for EX1  $65

ACT-10 rain cover for EX1  $59

Azden dual-channel wireless micsAzdenCorp.com  (516) 328-7500

Portable teleprompter $900
500 watt LED video light $450  PrompterPeople..com

The Pioneer BDR-202 Blu-ray DVD burner and Sony Vegas 8.0b can be purchased at VideoGuys.com

A .8x wide angle lens adapter for the Sony PMW EX1 might be needed for close-up interviews.  A 77mm UV filter would protect the lens from dust and scratches and also cut glare.

The Sony PMW EX1 is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the EX3 camcorder, but the video quality is the same.   The EX1 doesn't take the interchangeable lenses or have the additional studio camera features of the EX3.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The RED One camera is for very high definition video recording and editing, then converting to 35mm or 70mm film.

RED One Camera  Red.com
RED One accessories  SimVideo.com

----------------------------------------------------

For studio applications, you might consider three Sony PMW-EX3 camcorders which cost about $8,300 each.  These three-chip camcorders offer full widescreen 1920x1080p HD recording, for broadcast by HD satellite.

See Sony.com/xdcamex for more information.  Shop BHPhotoVideo.com.  I recommend an extended warranty on a new expensive camcorder or a quad core video editing notebook computer like the Hewlett-Packard HDX 18-1180US.

You will need thirteen half-hour or one-hour completed shows to sell a season series to a major network.

You can build an inexpensive studio with daylight florescent lights and microphones on the ceiling to use for photography, TV production, and filmmaking.  Use a Mackie audio mixer with a BeachTek XLR adapter for prosumer camcorders that lack low-impedance balanced mic inputs.  Shop eBay.com, cnet.com, and other places for equipment.

I recommend Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate and Vegas 8.0b for video editing.  These editors support some Blu-ray DVD burners.

These editors and also DivX 6.8 (free for standard version / $20 for Pro) will take advantage a quad core processor.  Add lots of RAM.

Shoot and edit in widescreen 1920x1080p HD video whenever possible for DVD distribution, HD broadcasting, streaming, conversion to film, and archival purposes.

An SD DVD made from an HD movie will have better video quality than an SD DVD made from an SD movie, due to more video resolution in the HD acquisition and editing formats.

Shop TigerDirect.com, NewEgg.com and BHPhotoVideo.com for quad core PC computer and video equipment and software.  Shop VideoGuys.com for the Pioneer Blu-ray DVD burner videoguys.com/bdr202.html and other video editing hardware and software.

A good external hard drive for video editing with a notebook computer is the BUFFALO 1TB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 / eSATA:  $ 165 plus shipping from NewEgg.com.

Television Production Handbook by Herbert Zettl is an excellent textbook about equipment and production techniques.  Videography is a professional television equipment magazine.

Videomaker magazine has many helpful reviews and advice for using prosumer equipment with professional results.  For more online information see VideoGuys.com/dtvhome.html.

 Tibetan Lamas

I spent a lot of time taking classes at Naropa University http://naropa.edu  and also tried Shambhala Training  http://shambhala.org.  I was somewhat close to Trungpa Rinpoche and studied under other lamas, especially Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche  http://rinpoche.com.

Trungpa Rinpoche and Thrangu Rinpoche were of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.  I met His Holiness the 16th Karmapa http://karmapa.org/history/karmapa_16/index.htm, the head of the Kagyu lineage, and liked him very much.

Also, I am a fan of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama http://dalailama.com, who is the head of the Geluk lineage.  We have been friends for maybe twenty years.

I appreciate Tibetan cultureI believe the lamas have a set of practices that will help bring world peace and happiness to all beings, which our planet currently needs.

In addition, I am a member of the International Campaign for Tibet  http://savetibet.org.

The Jewel Ornament of Liberation by Gampopa is a good book about Tibetan Buddhism.
to order a copy from Snow Lion Publications for about $20.

The path to world peace and happiness to all beings is an international, intercultural, and interfaith project though, so I try not to reject other disciplines because I sometimes favor the Tibetan Buddhist viewpoint.  We can all work together.

All individuals can practice generosity, patience, gentleness, kindness, and other virtues in their personal lives to realize the common goals of peace and happiness.  As individuals develop these qualities in themselves, the result will be a more peaceful and happier world for all beings.

In particular, the practice of nonviolence by individuals will certainly contribute toward the universal goal of world peace.  As peaceful mind is the foundation of happiness for every person, world peace is also the foundation of happiness for all beings.

Through all these centuries, it has been the longing of every human heart to find peace of mind and happiness.  As we work together in small groups to achieve our common goals, the world at large is also affected and changed.

Sitting practice also helps us develop the qualities of generosity, patience, gentleness, and kindness.  Just thirty minutes per day of sitting practice will lead to peace and happiness in due time.

The beneficial effects of sitting practice also extend into postmeditation, or meditation in action.  The virtuous qualities we develop in sitting practice are carried into our daily lives, and we become more mindful of everything we do.  Our psychosomatic world is gradually transformed into a more tranquil and joyful world by sitting practice meditation.

Sitting practice also works well with the practice of nonviolence.  Please try this and see for yourself

A good time for sitting practice is when there is neurotic haste or negative emotion, which often leads to harmful activitySitting practice is also helpful for those unfortunate persons who are afflicted with greed, vanity, excessive pride, arrogance, moodiness, emotional outbursts, and temper tantrums.  Sitting practice cuts through stress and synchronizes intuition and intellect.

A daily practice schedule is good, too.  To learn more about sitting practice, see  http://shambhala.org/meditation.  For personal meditation instruction and group practice, visit a meditation group  http://shambhala.org/centers  or retreat center  http://shambhala.org/centers/practice-retreat.php.

Sitting practice is good.  Sitting practice is very important for every personSitting practice is non-sectarian and will enhance both secular and religious activities.

I recommend sitting practice highly.  Please try sitting practice meditation.

The three wheels of practice are meditation, study, and work.  There are many different practices within these three categories, but sitting practice meditation is the most important.  Find your center, plan ahead, and then take action.

My spiritual heritage is Southern Baptist.  My father was a respected Sunday school teacher, and my mother attended Bible college for a long time.  I believe in the Holy Spirit.

I am interested in all kinds of Christianity and other religions, too.

I recommend these books to anyone who is interested in helping with the peace-making efforts in the Middle East:

Gorenberg, Gershom.  The End of Days:  Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount. Copyright 2000.

Carter, Jimmy.  We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land.  Copyright 2008.

Carter, Jimmy.  Palestine:  Peace Not Apartheid.  Copyright 2006.

These books are available from Simon and Schuster simonandschuster.com

Ross, Dennis.  The Missing Peace.  Copyright 2004:  Farrar, Straus and Giroux.  New York.  macmillanacademic.com/Academic/search/SearchBookDisplay.asp?BookKey=2454057

The idea of adding Tibetan-style meditation to peace-making efforts in a war zone is basically to slow things down so people can see what they are doing better.  Mind would move from the fight-or-flight mentality of the reptilian brain to the more enlightened and rational thought processes of the mammalian brain.

Tonglen practice should absorb anger in the environment and then transform it to non-duality and compassion with a sense of humor.

In practice this would include both sitting and walking meditation, and shamatha and tonglen, on both sides of the war zone.  If we can make peace in the Holy Land, we can make it anywhere.

See http://shambhala.org/centers for more information on these Tibetan-style meditation practices.
